The Ministry of Construction has confirmed that they are preparing several hundred million kuna for a project to revamp household energy. They will also be financing up to 50 percent of the revamps, and it is possible that several thousand household will be revamped within the project.

A look at Nevenka Glavic's house with a new facade cost around 50,000 kuna. Of that, 30,000 kuna was provided by the government, three years ago, when the last funds for household energy revamping were handed out.

"We are very satisfied. Savings are noticeable, almost 50 percent during the winter, and it's much cooler during the summer. We don't need air conditioning, we just close the doors", Glavica said.

A new round of funds for household energy revamping is set to begin next year, with the Ministry of Construction securing 200 million kuna from European funds.

"Old buildings are generally energy inefficient. When you revamp the facade, the flat consumes less energy and its price is automatically higher", explained Boro Vujović from the Croatian Chamber of Commerce's Real Estate Committee.

There will also be funds available starting in the fall for the revamping of kindergartens, schools and all other public institutions. Applications will begin on September 4th, and the budget will be increased due to higher interest, from 3.8 billion to 11.1 billion kuna.

However, the question remains as to who will be conducting the work as the market lacks facade builders and other construction workers.

"Construction operatives are lacking and it is a large question as to how this will be carried out on the ground, considering the lack of personnel in the construction industry", Vujović said.
