The first characteristic that stairs must meet is comfort, which is determined by the ratio of height and width of the stairs, sufficient width of the landing and safe material from which the handrails are made.

Once these conditions are met, the next criterion is safety, which is a mandatory aspect in designing stairs. Safety is ensured by the choice of anti-slip material and the installation of adequate railings or handrails. When choosing material for stairs, it is essential to consider the possibility of slipping. If you already have stairs, you can cover them with stasis or carpet to reduce the risk of slipping and, at the same time, change their appearance or color. In the case of single or console stairs, it is necessary to install a railing on the open side. For dual or circular stairs surrounded by a wall on all sides, a handrail is required at least on one side. Often, stairs in a flat or house are neglected as a lost part of the interior. However, with the help of decoration, they can become an interesting nook in the apartment. By painting the stairs in one or more colors or by sticking decorative wallpaper, you can achieve an original solution. Small pots with flowers, decorative candles or ceramic vases placed along the edge of the stairs can further decorate the space. Walls inside the stairs can serve as an ideal place for placing pictures or photos. Lighting also significantly affects the appearance of the stairs. Natural light provides the most beautiful effect. Stairs illuminated evenly with daylight make them visually wider, brighter and more comfortable to use. If daylight is not available, it is necessary to install artificial lighting. Indirect lighting under the handrails or along the side walls can provide a pleasant atmosphere during the night hours. Excess space or "lost" space under the stairs often presents a challenge in terms of utilizing it. Most often, it is used for the placement of built-in cupboards, chests or a small closet. Depending on the position and height of the space under the stairs, it can be converted into a practical space for a small desk or library. Another solution can include the installation of kitchen elements or a small toilet, provided there are the necessary installations and sufficient space.
